Assignment 01

Timeline and Diagram Analysis

This research project adopts document analysis methodology that involves documenting, analysing, producing, and a critical chronological and diagrammatical interpretation of Modern Malaysian architectural history. It emphasizes critical anaylsis of the post Merdeka / Independence of Malaysian architecture in the effort to understand the influences of post-modernism to architectural design and construction, building science and technology, as well as urban design. The project aims to distinguish the way in which many diverse factors contribute to the development of Modern Malaysian architecture.

Given a list of buildings in Kuala Lumpur to document and analyse, we were tasked to produce a brief timeline and axonometric diagrams explaining the history and architectural features of the given buildings. The information and analysis were then compiled into an A5 size foldable booklet. This allowed the students to gone through a process of making research analysis through proper referencing with literature review and documental analysis on Modern Malaysian architecture practices. The two buildings we have been given are University Hospital and Sime Darby Building. This is a very interesting learning process on analysing the influence of the buildings from different aspects. Click here to read the booklet co-produced by my group and two other groups.

The final outcome of the project on diagram analysis based on the selected buildings.

Assignment 02

Report (Group & Individual)

This project is a continuation of the previous research project. Klang Valley is a rich source of architectural heritage dating from pre-colonial, colonial, post independence until present times. The historical richness creates a very vibrant architectural fabric. As mentioned earlier, modern architecture emerged rapidly from the 1950's to 1970's in tandem with economic growth after the nation's independence. This followed the international style that spread across the world in the 1930's to 50's. However, many  historical modernistic buildings may face the risk of being demolished to make way for more contemporary buildings. Thus, by recording, documenting and analysing the buildings, we can contribute top preserve the historical evidence of valuable Modern Architecture in Klang Valley, including Kuala Lumpur. The task of this project is to compile the findings of a selected building in the form of a report, supported by images and analysis diagrams produced in the first project, to be published as a web book. I am in-charge of the architectural elements part. A deeper understanding towards the architectural elements found in Brutalist building is developed. On the other hand, we found out that the elements is altered a bit compared to the Brutalist building at western into the local climate. We analyze the building with suitable comparison with similar building from this same era. To read the report, kindly click here.
