Architectural Design Project

The theme of final studio in degree is to create architecture with social impact and the resolution with integration of technology, environment and cultural contexts in architectural design. The specific theme for this semester is Creativity and Place-Making: Designing Inspiring City Centers for Culture.

Assignment 01

Pre-design Studies & Analysis

Through online research and data bank provided, the site analysis is carried out individually different from previous studio due to constraints of MCO. We have to gain familiarity with the people, place and time meaning, proposed user, the site and the past, present and future of the site. Hence, the selected site is at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock in front of Pasar Seni, a site that most of us went before in Kuala Lumpur. The components to produce include urban studies, site analysis, project impact analysis, preliminary design studies, initial design intent or response and precedent studies.

What is a city made up of? From the past. Aging is natural process every human being would go through and it applies to the city as well.  We would not want to see our city to turn younger where all the social memories that ties the community and place would dissapear and forgotten as time passes. We have to preserve the past of the old city and prepare it for the future.

Final Assignment

The Rhythm Music Cultural Experience Centre

Kuala Lumpur, a city which begin at the confluence of Klang and Gombak river, is now the capital of Malaysia. The site held at the historic core of Kuala Lumpur which has a wide range of arts, tangible, and intangible cultural heritage. Similar with other old city, the collective memories of people is slowly dissapearing in the city with the new development. Hence, the need of strengthening the sense of belonging of people with the city is crucial.

The fusion music cultural experience centre provides opportunity to create interactive engagement with the public while complementing with the use of century-old historical Central Market as an art and craft hub. The music collaboration between local association and government university would strengthen the cultural diversity element on site.  Diverse and cohesive communities can be built and the quality of life in the city been improved by re-connecting the river with city and local music culture forming the rhythm of Malaysia.

Reflection

This semester is a unique semester where we could not conduct physical site visit and have face-to-face tutorial. However, I am really grateful for having Ar. Prince as my tutor who always support our ideas and guide us with patience. The heritage core of Kuala Lumpur is a place I went with my family since young for the bookstores along Jalan Sultan. Throughout this years, I realized that there are more changes occurred to the site. I feel so grateful for being able to design for the site in this final semester.  I also learned the importance of always put ourselves as the end users, similarly in life that we need to always think and care of others. The group tutorial conducted in the early stage of design is very useful as we can learn from each other and realize how each individual’s thinking is unique and distinct from each other. Along the way, my tutor also gave me a lot of guidance to look at things from different way and explore the possibilities behind every ideas. Thanks Semester 6 for teaching me how to embrace the changing flow and grow along with it.
