Architectural Design Studio II
This studio focuses on introducing spatial architectonics in the creation of architectural space and form/ understanding of building as an assembly of parts. The abstraction of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional compositions of space is also the key learning outcome which enable us to explore design processes through different types of drawing and making methods. The importance of space planning as a response to specific function and human needs and analyze user’s need and simple context have on design decisions.
Assignment 01
Famous Architects, Fabulous Houses – Diagrammatic Abstraction
A Precedent Study on Residence Rabbits
This project instill us the ability to ‘diagram’ and analyse architectural work of selected architect with understanding to basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames. Hence, we are required to investigate and formulate your findings into a set of 8 analysis diagrams and 8 diagrammatic models (8 x 8 x 8 cm). The models should be precise and informative to express the analysis of the ideas hidden in the project assigned.
In a group of 6, we have been given the house, Residence Rabbit, Thailand by BoonDesign + T.R.O.P. terrains + open space. 'Residence Rabbits' is a home of a landscape architect, his wife and their young son. Because the owner is a landscape architect, his brief to the architect was that he needed ‘a house with a series of courtyards'. The placement of the white walls facing to west and east is to block the harsh sunlight for southeast country like ours and there's two view of each space which is the north and south side. It is interesting to learn how the Boon architect collaborate with the client himself to create a beautiful building which merge with the landscape well. The white walls acts as a natural blank canvas for the building and the shadow created is an interesting art itself which changing with time. The courtyard and pool play an important role to create microclimate to the building and allow natural breeze and air into the building.
The boards and models.
A series of perspective rendering.
8 diagrammatic models and diagrams analysing different aspects from the building ranging from circulation to more.
Assignment 02
Picnic Pavilion @ Kek Lok Tong, Ipoh
框。眶
This project enable us to conduct site analysis of the physical context both at a macro & micro level of the overall site. With reference provided as a framework for our recording and analysis of site in a big group. In-group of 2, we need to design a picnic pavilion with a maximum volume of 30m³. This pavilion shall include the activities of relaxing, meditating etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated with spatial planning. This structure should correspond to the site that you have chosen. Adequate access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory.
The concept me and Esther chose to present are framing the view of a series of scenery and exhibit the nature to the public when they use our pavilion. The design process of the final outcome is based on the 9 grid system. I have learnt to think more out of the box from this project and not too limiting ourselves to the physical constraint but trying to achieve balance or solve the design issue with the simplest and effective method. The roof and solid void element is further emphasis and shown in our design to design an interactive space for a family to share, enjoy and picnic under our pavilion.
Assignment 03
Weekend Lodging @ Kek Lok Tong, Ipoh
A Transitionary Experience
This is an individual project continuing from the site Kek Lok Tong. The final project brief for Studio II calls for a weekend lodging at KL Forest Eco Park, an urban forest park situated just at the site A &have the gross floor area of 150sqm for any target users who visits the garden. Continuing from the concept of last project, I further explore on how different framing view method from the cave to the garden. They gave a very different view compared to ground level as my building being elevated from the ground.
A transitionary experience is created through the framing of a series of perspective. Slowly from an enclosed space, to layered space, to weightless and afterthat end with an open up view at the roof garden. All the spaces are connected to the spiral staircase at behind which frame the front and back view. Besides the form oriented towards the view the forms are expand to enable the feeling similar to the cave which slowly reveal and open up the space. The frame of each opening are designnated carefully according to the view I frame to give the viewer different atmosphere.
Reflection
This semester firstly introduced the site context to us. It is very interesting to look at the site, experienced ourselves and design responding to the site. Mr. Bryan taught us on the importance of expressing the design through materiality and simple elements yet bringing out the theme and design concept which we wanted to represent. We also need to have more consideration on spatial minimum size requirement, the flow of spaces and more. Case studies is very important as we can see how the previous examples they implement to their design and learning from them.
