Architecture Culture & History I

Wisdom from the past shall not be forgotten. In order to be inspired and create innovations in architecture, one must learn from the history and cultures of different civilizations that existed long time ago, with some of their creations still standing tall in recent times.

Architecture Culture & History I is a module designed to introduce basic architectural theory to students through a consideration of intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships. Also, it is structured to examine architecture history via a chronological survey of the developments of Western architecture from the beginning of time to the period of Enlightenment, with consideration of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors which have influenced the design of buildings.

This assignment focuses on investigating historical works to not just enrich students' proficiency in architectural language, design and ideas, but most importantly it aims to develop and hone students’ historical and architectural criticism skills. Through the study of an existing building (from a list issued by the lecturers), students will be able to communicate and expand their own architectural vocabulary and develop design concepts. In a group of 7-8, students are required to conduct precedent study analysis on specific buildings via site visits and through on-line forum discussion, sketch analysis journal, verbal and digital presentations. The precedent study analysis project should help clarify questions of “why” the case study is historically, culturally and architecturally inspired and “how” the design concepts derived from the past have influenced and/or been reflected in the case study, and by extension how these can be developed and expanded to be creatively and innovatively integrated into a prospective design project.

Our group have been assigned to study on SMK Maxwell and to compare with the architecture in Roman period. We are required to produce a precedent study and analysis sketch journal and a digital analysis presentation. Other than comparing the architectural elements of the buildings in Roman period and SMK Maxwell we also analyze on how this school's design adapted to Malaysia weather and how time have influence the buildings such as site context etc.
